EAST LANSING — While some other BCS schools may be opening their seasons against FCS teams, Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio doesn’t mind beginning with a challenge.
“I think it’s a philosophy here maybe that we’re going to step out and play whoever,” Dantonio said. “When somebody comes and says, ‘Do you want to play such and such this particular year’ I’m not going to shrug my shoulders and say ‘No.’
“I’m just going to say, if it’s good for the program we’ll play ‘em.”
On paper, this is the Spartans’ toughest opening-week opponent since beginning the 2008 season with a 38-31 loss at Cal.
Boise State enters Spartan Stadium with a 73-6 record under coach Chris Petersen and wins over Georgia, Virginia Tech and Oregon in recent season openers.
Down the road, Michigan State already has a home-and-home series set up with Oregon in 2014 and 2015 and will open the 2016 season against Alabama.
Games against Notre Dame also are slated for 2013 and 2016.
